You're also going to draw some lands (usually ~1/3), so you want the average damage per non-land card to be closer to 3 to have a reasonable kill time. Your best bet would be to sac a creature and get 2 to face and bolt the face. It could very much be variance that you are experiencing. Cheap creatures were often the most important “burn” spells in the deck, as you didn’t care if they died once they were able to get a couple hits in.
